Bamford & Bretton

🧭 Distance: 15km (420m ascent)

🥾 Duration: 5 hours with breaks

📍Start: Bamford Train station (Hope Valley S33 0BN)

🅿️ Parking: There’s some parking at Bamford station, but more on the road 'Mytham Bridge', a quiet, dead-end lane with loads of free space! We recommend a quick online search to see if it looks OK for you.

Time: 10:45am

🧭 Walk leader: Jonathan

🔍 Description: Starting off at the Trian station we cross a fairly busy road and then pass the Garden Centre - where there are some toilets and snack options. Then we follow the river Derwent downstream through fields for the first hour or so - at a very gentle pace.

At a road junction we move onto a quiet lane, then farm tracks and forest trails with some steeper sections. This path winds up into Bretton Clough, a lovely mixed woodland and site of an old settlement long since abandoned. Expect this section to be very muddy and potentially slippy if there has been recent rainfall.

Next we climb out of the woods and thick bracken into the village of Abney which is home to more horses than people, and onto Offerton Moor with fantastic views across Hope Valley. A short, steep descent on a country lane brings us to the village of Shatton, then Bamford. If the garden centre is still open it's a good chance to rest and refuel before the homeward journey.

💬 TLDR: This is a lengthy hike with scenic views, varied terrain, a river and some mud.

🗺️ Route: Queer Out Here walk from Bamford

🥪 What to bring: Sturdy shoes with ankle support than can withstand mud and uneven ground. Hiking boots are recommended but decent trainers if you don’t have boots. Warm layers and a waterproof jacket. 2L of water - it may be warm! Sunscreen. A packed lunch and plenty of snacks to keep you going.

🚽Toilets: None at the station at the start of the walk, but some at the garden centre we go past - please consider buying something in their cafe if you do visit the toilet.

✨ Vibes: Summer fun and supportive queer energy / making new friends / woods and moorland

🐶Dogs: Not allowed on this route due to the amount of livestock fields and protected wildlife areas we pass through.

Look out for this friendly face at the station!
