Come and learn navigation in the Peak District!
📅When: Saturday 1 November 10AM (finishing around 3PM)
🚂Where: Meet @ Hathersage Train Station
🏳️⚧️ Who: Trans & nonbinary participants (8 spaces available)
🪙Cost: FREE, funded by Komoot
This is a friendly, beginner-level day for trans and non-binary people who want to learn the basics of navigating in the outdoors. No prior experience is needed. Maps will be provided.
Over the course of 4–5 hours, we’ll cover:
the basics of map reading and orientation
how to use those skills to plan a short walk (which we’ll do together after lunch)
weather forecasts, kit lists, and simple emergency procedures
The teaching will be delivered by Jonathan Hyde, a qualified outdoor leader and experienced teacher. Jonathan is a queer, cis man and a committed ally to our community.
What to bring/wear:
Medium rucksack - 20-30 litres size is ideal
Walking shoes/boots - it will likely be muddy, and we will walk on rough terrain
Waterproofs, even if the forecast is good
Water, lunch, snacks & thermos for a warm drink if you have one.
Multiple warm layers: it is November in the Peaks and sometimes it can get cold. A warm fleece or synthetic jacket is great. Gloves and hat too!
Hathersage has a number of cafes to buy extra lunch and there are public, non-gendered toilets too.
As this is a funded course with limited spaces - if you book a place but for any reason can no longer make it, please let us know ASAP so we can give your spot to someone on the waiting list :)
