Grindleford via Burbage & Higger Tor

Come and walk with us in magical Grindleford!

On a walk via Burbage, Higger Tor and Millstone Edge. Honestly, we didn't make these place names up. The Peak District is wild.

When: Sunday 28 September

Distance:
7 miles / 11.5 km

Duration: 4-5 hours (including breaks)

Start time and location: 10:40am at Grindleford Station (Manchester train arrives at 10:36 and Sheffield at 10:31)

Parking: Station Road or Grindleford Station car park (£2.20 per day via RingGo, location 35712), or free roadside parking on the B6251.

Walk Leader: AJ

Description:

From Grindleford Station we begin with a short stretch on quiet lanes before climbing gently through woodland paths next to a river up towards Burbage Valley. The Burbage Valley section is mostly wide, easy-going tracks, though expect some uneven and rocky ground. Reaching Upper Burbage Bridge, we turn onto moorland paths that climb steadily to Higger Tor, where the gritstone plateau gives panoramic views across the Hope Valley, Stanage Edge, and Carl Wark hillfort. The summit is rocky underfoot.

From here we descend past moorland paths and pick up the trail along Millstone Edge, a dramatic gritstone edge overlooking Hathersage. Sections of this path are narrow, uneven, and close to a high edge, so take special care here.

The final stage winds downhill through woodland tracks back into Grindleford, finishing at the station café (open until 4 on Sundays)

What to bring: Sturdy walking boots/shoes with good grip (paths are rocky and can be muddy in places), waterproofs (weather changes fast), warm layers, water, snacks, lunch, and sun protection.

Toilets: At Grindleford Station Café (start/end) and at the Longshaw Estate Visitor Centre (if we detour slightly). None en route on the moors.

Vibes: Queer joy in the outdoors, making new friends in a supportive space. Expect gritstone edges, open moorland, and some iconic Peak District views.

Dogs: Dogs welcome! Please keep dogs on a short lead and be mindful of anybody who might be nervous.

What about the weather? Rain is fine! Walk would be postponed in case of dangerous weather - like storms or dangerously high winds.

Look out for this friendly face at the station!
